Guy Goodall, Manager Roofstore P&P Ltd

“Due to Quarr Abbey being a listed building it was important that we sourced quality lead from a company that would also give us excellent service. Midland Lead met all our requirements and I would not hesitate recommending them to any merchant.”

Roofstore P&P Ltd is an independent roofing merchant based on the Isle of Wight. The company stocks a full range of lead sheet in codes 3, 4 and 5 cut to the metre at no extra charge. Midland Lead has a long-term working relationship with Roofstore P&P Ltd, going back many years.

Quarr Abbey

Quarr Abbey was founded in 1132 by the Catholic Order of St Benedict Monks. Much of this is now a scheduled ancient monument. In 2012, Quarr Abbey was put on the World Monument Fund watch list and soon after funding was secured to save this famous heritage site.  The Quarr Abbey restoration project comprises 4 main sections of work:

  • stabilising work to preserve the ruins
  • repairs to the 1907 church roof
  • preservation of a stable yard and buildings into a visitor centre
  • formation of a new car park, access road, arboreal area & paths

Roofstore supplied approximately 4 tonnes of lead sheet in code 6 to the contractor (Stoneham Construction Ltd) onsite. Stoneham used the lead sheet – and woodcore rolls and patination oil – to successfully convert a flat church roof into a pitched roof.

Roofstore P&P Ltd prides itself on its efficient and friendly service, and with this logistically challenging project managed to do just that. Due to close working relationships with both Midland Lead and Stoneham Construction Ltd, the project went smoothly and all time-scales were met.

Guy Goodall: “What made this job rather tricky is the fact that Quarr Abbey is a working monastery. So with regards to delivery of supplies, we had to cause the least disruption to the monks working and living in the monastery. We have worked closely with Midland Lead to get the deliveries of the materials exactly right!
